Another bell-ringing for Belmadar! This time to announce our recent tender win of the Dawn Fraser Baths redevelopment project for Inner West Council (IWC). Having previously completed the council’s award-winning Emanuel Tsardoulias library, designed by TKD Architects, we are excited to once again partner with IWC and TKD in preserving this iconic structure for generations to come.
The Inner West Courier ran a story about the tender win announcement on their front page last week. Read the story here.
Since being built in 1882 the heritage-listed baths have been widely used by the local community, particularly Australia’s oldest active swimming club – the Balmain Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club. The baths are the oldest remaining example of a fully enclosed tidal pool in Sydney Harbour, and are named in honour of the club’s most famous member, Olympian Dawn Fraser.
Designed by TKD Practice Director George Phillips, the project will see the baths’ central pavilion and boardwalk raised 1.25 metres to accommodate rising sea levels, in addition to the construction of new recycled timber pavilions, amenities, kiosk and lighting towers.
Thanks to the site’s sensitive heritage nature and water location, the project definitely poses some unique buildability challenges which we look forward to tackling when works commence in October. Look out for more updates as the project progresses!
